REC Jalandhar - A Brief Profile

Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Regional Engineering College is the youngest among the 17 RECs in the counrty. The college was established in 1987 as a joint enterprise of the Govt. of India and the Govt. of Punjab. The college admitted its first batch of students in 1989. It is situated on the Jalandhar-Amritsar bye pass and its campus is spread over 154 acres. The College is under the administrative control of its board of governors with Minister of Technical Education, Punjab Govt. as the Chairperson. The central Govt. has met the expenditure on construction of buildings and also contributes funds for the purchase of equipments. The recurring expenditure is shared by the two governments on a 50:50 basis.

Since its inception RECJ has many new ideas and innovations in the areas of curriculum and course development as well as in establishing the laboratories. The emphasis has been to provide a coherent science and technology base in emerging areas. Keeping this in view the institution signed MOUs with IIT Delhi, CLRI Madras, CII New Delhi and Microsoft USA to seek guidancs and expertise.

The faculty of the institution which is recruited at all India level, keeps itself abreast of the latest trends and innovations in their areas of interest. The Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India, New Delhi, has sanctioned several projects under the schemes of Modernisation & Thrust Areas and has sanctioned a sum of about Rs. 200 lacs for this purpose. The Ministry has further earmarked Rs. 400 lacs for creating computer networking & infrastructural facilities under the scheme of making RECJ a center of excellence.

Mechanical Engineering Dept.

The department has emerged as one of the major Engineering Departments of the college. The department is equipped with well qualified and experienced faculty. Besides teaching and other academic activities, the faculty is also engaged in providing consultancy services to the local industry and other user organisations in design, testing, efficiency improvements, etc. There exists a regular interaction with the Central Institute of Hand Tools, Jalandhar for metallurgical studies. The main areas of strength of the department are in the fields of material testing and development, studying vibrational characteristics of parts and industrial automation. The continued efforts of the students and faculty of dept. has secured placement in various leading industries like Whirlpool, GN, J.K. Tyres, HLL, Escorts, Usha, GNA Group, PTL, EIL, Punj Lloyd, Malvika Steel Ltd.

Society Of Mechanical Engineers - SOME

Society of Mechanical Engineers was established in 1993. It has a membership strength of 140. The society is proud of its members as most of them have excellent records in the field of Mecahnical Engg. Many of them have won awards in paper presentation and model competitions. The society has been promoting interaction among the industry, students and the institute to enhance the cause of technical education. The society has organised and conducted various seminars, lectures and workshops from time to time. Some of them are industrial visits, Silsila '95, Sueiz '96, Yantriki '97 & '99, and many more.

The main objectives of the society are :-

  • To raise and maintain high standard of education by interaction.
  • To establish relationship with the industry for the benefit of the students.
  • To establish and maintain contact among students, teaching staff and industry not only at the regional level but also at the national level.
  • To organise national level technical workshops, seminars, conferences, symposiums, exhibitions etc. for updating the technical knowledge of the students.
